Hey fans! Be sure to check out this awesome review left on behalf of Lexus Carlsbad! It's a great way to end our 2012 year!

Yelp
5-Star Review on Yelp:

"Ahhhh yes, Lexus Carlsbad.  I have purchased 3 brand new cars in my lifetime, all luxury, but never a Lexus.

I am the ultimate car salesman's nightmare.  I come into the deal completely educated with a binder full of details concerning EXACTLY what car I need as well as a numbers breakdown of what I am willing to pay (and not a penny more!)  I do all my research BEFOREHAND and then I call you to see if you can work with me. No?  Drama? Wishy washy?  HANG UP. Its a buyer's market people!

Luckily I was matched with the ultimate car salesman, Bob Kreger, who doesn't play games.  He asked me what my bottom line was and asked me what I wanted on the car, what color combos, etc. Then he said okay, I have the car you want. Come get it.

What?  What do you mean come get it?  You're supposed to fight me on this, you're supposed to tell me you cant POSSIBLY give the car away for that amount, you're supposed to lie and not tell me about the kickbacks you get from Lexus regarding getting this car off the lot.  Bob.  What are you doing? Bob.  What is happening?

This was the only Lexus dealership in Southern CA that had the color combination and package I wanted, (something I was NOT willing to budge on) and given that kind of leverage he definitely could have charged me more.

I cannot state this enough that its the salesman who sells the car. If  I do NOT like the salesman I wont buy from that dealership. Don't try to highball me, don't try to do the fake negotiation with me (let me see if I can run this by the manager), etc. Give me a fair price and I will buy the car from you, SIMPLE.

Bob was quintessentially everything I was looking for in a car salesman and I appreciated his assistance greatly.  He made this process completely painless and I can't even explain how much of a relief that was.

Bonus points for the Finance manager, I believe his name was Tony? I'm not sure but I was starving and he gave me a bag of chips from his desk drawer, lol really cute, funny personable guy that made shelling out that much money less painful.

Bottom line: Bob is not just a great salesman, he is a great person."

Ultimate Commuter Car Reinvented as a Luxury Hybrid

In a break with tradition, this Lexus ES doesn't have a V6 engine that runs as smoothly as an expensive drip coffeemaker. Instead, the 2013 Lexus ES 300 hybrid has a four-cylinder engine, a couple electric motors and a battery pack, and operates more like a Keurig brewer, only without the wasteful little plastic pods.

Lexus estimates that one in four ES customers now cares more about fuel economy than straight-line performance, and now the automaker is betting that those people are willing to pay extra for it. In this case, the 2013 Lexus ES 300h costs $2,750 more than the more powerful ES 350.

That's a lot of money to spend on a good cause. Thankfully, the Lexus ES 300h is more than just frugal on gas; it's still enjoyable to drive when you forget to care about mpg.

Is 40 MPG Good Enough?
Forty mpg is the EPA's combined rating for the ES 300h, which also earns 40 city and 39 highway mpg ratings. That combined number is what might talk you out of buying the 268-horsepower 2013 Lexus ES 350, which is rated at 24 mpg combined.

We hit 40.8 mpg without trying very hard on the Edmunds Testing Team's official fuel economy test loop. It's a 105-mile route that includes plenty of stop-and-go that exploits the advantages of series-parallel hybrids like this Lexus ES, which shuts off its gasoline engine early and often.

Our next 600 miles are mostly highway and we drive them like a typical Lexus ES owner. Accordingly, we're not aggressive or mean, but we stay with the flow of Southern California traffic and resist any urge to draft off 18-wheelers. We wrap up the week with a respectable 37.9 mpg average.

It's a solid number for a 3,700-pound sedan the size of the ES, but its competition has thrown off the curve for large hybrid sedans. The 2013 Ford Fusion Hybrid is rated at 47 mpg combined, while the 2013 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid is sitting almost pretty at 45 combined. Getting 40 mpg in a midsize sedan doesn't seem so impressive anymore.

It's Not Slow
But there's a lot to be said for the way the 2013 Lexus ES 300h gathers speed in cutthroat freeway traffic. It's quiet, unstrained and almost quick.

The best part of its drivetrain is the strong 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder gasoline engine. The Atkinson-cycle engine has a narrow power band, but it still manages 156 hp at 5,700 rpm and 156 pound-feet at 4,500 rpm. With another 44 hp coming from the nickel-metal hydride battery pack via the electric drive motor, the hybrid ES gets a nice round 200-hp rating (just like the Camry Hybrid and Avalon Hybrid).

The only time we really hear the gas engine is when we're climbing a steady grade — the continuously variable transmission (CVT) has it slaving away at redline to maintain our 70-mph pace. Otherwise, this four-cylinder is hardly working, and we're barely aware of the CVT blending the two power sources. Of course, there's an Eco mode that slackens throttle response when you want to eke every last mpg and Sport mode for when you just don't care. We leave it in Eco and rarely go hungry in passing situations.

At our test track, the 2013 ES 300h arrives at 60 mph in 7.8 seconds (or 7.4 seconds with a foot of rollout as on a drag strip) and goes through the quarter-mile in 15.7 seconds at 89.8 mph. This gives it a half-second advantage over the less powerful Fusion Hybrid, and it's nearly a second quicker than the smaller Lexus HS 250h that the ES replaces. It's also more than a second quicker than the Buick LaCrosse eAssist.

Most important, it's not drastically slower than the 2013 ES 350, which hits 60 in 6.5 seconds (6.2 with rollout) and passes through the quarter-mile in 14.5 seconds at 98.0 mph.

Everybody Awake?
Back roads aren't for hybrids, but we're here on the Angeles Crest Highway and the guy in the AMG Benz isn't pulling away from us until the road gets straight. That's not to say the 2013 Lexus ES 300h moves like a sport sedan, but it has a more controlled ride than any ES before it.

Incredibly, the ES 300h actually feels like it wants to turn, an alien sensation in a car with Lexus ES badges. Its precise electric-assist steering provides a smooth and logical increase in effort as you turn the wheel.

Although the brake pedal is a little soft, the ES 300h stops reliably and you rarely sense the transitions between regenerative braking and conventional friction braking action. A 129-foot stop from 60 mph at the track isn't stellar, but 62.3 mph through the slalom isn't bad for a large sedan of any persuasion. Of course, the unusually sporty Fusion Hybrid hauled itself through our cones at 64.3 mph.

If there's a downside to the Lexus ES sedan's newfound interest in handling, it's ride comfort. When we drove the ES 300h earlier this year, our test car had Michelin Primacy MXM4 tires and rode fine on Oregon roads. This car has P215/55R17 Bridgestone Turanza EL400-02 tires, and they don't offer as much compliance as we'd like over the bumps and expansion joints on Southern California freeways. At least the driver seat still has the cushiness you expect in a Lexus ES.

Who Wants Bamboo?
Although our ES 300h test car isn't as richly furnished as our long-term 2013 Lexus GS 350, materials quality is high for this class and everything is put together well.

The $1,370 Luxury package provides beautiful and sustainable bamboo trim, but then enlarges your environmental footprint by also adding leather upholstery. It's unclear if the cows that provided the leather were grass-fed.

Our car has the $2,625 Navigation package, which includes the Remote Touch interface, the computer-mouse-style controller that governs audio and nav functions. It feels clunky at first, but within a week, it gets more intuitive. We still like dial-type controllers, but Remote Touch gives you freer range to move the cursor around the screen.

Also part of this package is Lexus Enform, a catch-all term for the automaker's telematics system and smartphone apps suite. Pandora and Open Table are among the apps, and although integrating them into the car seems likes a good idea for commuters, in reality, it's kind of a hassle. Not only do you have to register for an account on a computer, the Enform app always has to be running on your phone and you can't call up playlists from any Pandora accounts you've previously opened.

In back, there's so much legroom no angry toddler has any hope of kicking your seat. However, tall adults will struggle to slide their feet under the front chairs, likely due to intrusion from the fan units for the optional ventilated seats. The battery pack also prevents you from folding the rear seat, but the 12.1-cubic-foot trunk (down 3 cubic feet from the ES 350) still has plenty of usable space for luggage.

Worth the Extra Money?
Maybe you've heard that we currently own a 1996 Lexus ES 300, which has been described as "simple transportation executed according to a very high standard of quality."

This 2013 Lexus ES 300h is a precision-built grandchild of that regal old ES. It's hard to call it simple, of course, as its hybrid drivetrain takes a pretty complicated path to achieve respectable acceleration. On the other hand, we've never gotten 40 mpg in our old ES 300, and there's no reason to think its previous owners did either.

Like its ancestor, the 2013 ES 300h is trying to be a luxury device — only this time there's a more obvious bent to environmental responsibility. And apart from its uncharacteristically firm ride, it succeeds at this mission.

However, in the small population of large front-wheel-drive hybrid sedans, the Lexus costs the most. A Fusion Hybrid equipped like our $46,084 Lexus would cost about $35K, while a LaCrosse eAssist comes in at around $37 grand. The revamped Lincoln MKZ Hybrid lands just under $44,000. So does the 2013 Avalon Hybrid, which shares its drivetrain and platform architecture with the ES 300h (their wheelbases are identical).

If you're looking for serious fuel efficiency in a full-size sedan package, the 2013 Lexus ES 300h isn't the cheapest source of piety per mile. However, if you're just as fanatical about your own comfort, you'll be hard-pressed to top the Lexus ES hybrid.

Hey fans! Check out this excellent review from Dennis!

Excellent Review on Google:

"I love my new car!I have been shopping for a new car for a while, my lease was coming due and I wanted something different. While shopping I looked at Audi, Mercedes, Infiniti, BMW, Jaguar, Hyundai and Lexus. I am sure you can only imagine the complexity of email communications and phone calls I had to deal with to make my decision. John Kelly was my salesperson at Carlsbad Lexus and I have to say he won my business hands down. At first I was not looking that heavy at the Lexus brand because I thought it was out of my price range, but John was forthright in providing me with upfront pricing and had all my answers for me. I never had any back and forth management action like many other dealerships I dealt with. I got a 2013 Lexus GS and I am thrilled the service, professionalism and the deal I got. Outstanding value! I look forward to dealing with them and the free car wash's."

Preview: Lexus takes enormous step forward with new IS

Lex
Looking past the camouflage, the new car earns the Lexus Spindle grille and LED daytime running lights. The interior was equally heavily camouflaged, but it was obvious that the cabin will mimic that of the larger GS, complete with the dash-mounted screen to the right of the central cluster. The new IS also features a single dashboard dial. The tachometer rings on the outer edge with the fuel economy, Drive Mode Select (more on this in a moment) and speedometer readouts sitting in the centre. It is an attractively clean and concise way of relaying all the relevant information.

Mr. Furuyama believes the new IS350 surpassed the present 3 Series in its fun-to-drive quotient. He is not wrong

The location and angle of the steering wheel has also been tweaked to improve the driving position. This and the new deep-dish style front buckets held me in place when the IS was pushed around a rally cross-style circuit in the parking lot of Santa Anita race track and on a fast run up a boulder-strewn canyon road — the heavy rain had initiated some pretty serious rockslides.

The more substantial work is found beneath the IS’s sheet metal. It starts with the body structure. Overall length is up 75 millimetres, the wheelbase grows by 70 mm and the width by 12 mm. The stretch in the wheelbase has been dedicated almost exclusively to the rear seat riders meaning the IS’s rear leg space now rivals that of the larger GS. Likewise, the platform has been strengthened through the use of structural adhesives, an increased number of spot welds and a new laser screw welding technique. Statically, the torsional rigidity is up 10% — the reality is the newfound stiffness has a greater effect on the dynamic aspects than that number suggests.

The stiffer platform improves both the ride quality and handling because it gives the new suspension a stronger base of operations. Up front, the double wishbone design has been retained, however, the stabilizer bar link has been reworked, which increases its rigidity by 20%. The IS’s new rear suspension was plucked directly from the GS. The new setup, especially with the optional active dampers aboard, does a very good job keeping the rubber on the road —P225/40 R18 front and substantial P255/35R18 rear tires on the test car. The steering has also been refined. Again, the starting point was the GS’s rack, however, further work has sharpened the on-centre feel and made the rack ratio faster. This brings better feedback without making the IS350 seem twitchy. It also adds much better straight-line stability. The final dynamic touch is found in the IS350’s larger front rotors and performance brake pads.

The vehicle tested was an IS350 F Sport. In this version, the spring rates remain the same as the stock suspension — it is the variable dampers that make the difference. The key is the driver’s ability to tailor various drivetrain aspects through the Drive Mode Select system. It offers Eco, Normal, Sport and Sport+ modes. Eco makes the throttle too soft, so it will see little use unless fuel economy is paramount. The normal mode is fine, although a faster reaction to throttle input would be appreciated. Sport speeds up the throttle response and tweaks the transmission’s shift points to make things feel far more urgent.

The best mode proved to be Sport+. It not only makes the throttle and transmission changes, it alters the steering’s weight and ratio as well as changing the dampers settings. This brings the best of both worlds — in the normal mode, the damping is 15% softer than the regular suspension, which makes the ride comfortable; Sport+ sharpens the damping so it 15% firmer than the regular suspension.

Mr. Furuyama says the main benchmark for the new IS was the previous-generation BMW 3 Series — he noted the current 3 Series was softened to make it more comfortable. As such, Mr. Furuyama believes the new IS350 surpassed the present 3 Series in its fun-to-drive quotient. He is not wrong.

Testing proved the IS350 to be noticeably crisper. The steering is much sharper and it turns in with more authority. The improvements were made all the more noticeable on the rain-soaked skid pad. There was very little body roll and less understeer when the IS was pushed as far as the conditions permitted. A g-force meter backed up all of my seat-of-the-pant evaluations. On the wet tarmac, the current IS350 available for testing pulled 0.81g before the stability control system intervened. The new IS350 F Sport prototypes were pulling 0.91g before stability control intervention. Now, that is a significant and quantifiable improvement.

While the engines carry over from the current cars, there is an important upgrade for the IS350 — the addition of an eight-speed transmission (the IS250 retains the previous six-speed box). In the acceleration portion of the skid pad test, the current car put 103 kilometres an hour on the speedometer before hitting the braking zone — the new car with its extra ratios was showing 114 km/h when it hit the same point. The difference is found in the taller first and second gear ratios. They give a noticeably faster launch and a much stronger mid-range. The transmission will also have a positive effect on fuel economy. The canyon drive proved the new car is very quiet. However, an intake noise attenuator ensures the driver hears the right noises when it’s appropriate.

The next-generation IS will make its debut appearance at the North American International Auto Show in January. Full specifications, content and pricing will be available at that time.

Hey fans! Check out this awesome review from Carolina!

5-Star Review on DealerRater:

"This was my first new car, right when I got there with my mother Ghassan came out and helped us right away, I did not wait long for someone to help us. Test drive the car fell in love went inside to do paper work, and Ghassan was a friendly funny guy, I was nervous but he made me feel welcome. And when the paper work for payments came by Aaron was a great guy, I felt no pressure from any of them everything went smoothly. I would recommend going there especially with those two."

Chromed 2013 Lexus LS in Florida!

2013 Lexus LS Chromed

The very first chromed 2013 Lexus LS has been spotted at JM Lexus in Florida:

After driving a sky blue GS in Pennsylvania, I can understand why wrapping vehicles in such drastic colors — something so unique definitely draws a lot of attention.

On the other hand, chrome might be taking it one step too far — I’m surprised it’s even legal to have something so (literally) flashy on the road.

2012 U.S. Sales Satisfaction Index (SSI) Study!

Nearly 80 percent of new-vehicle buyers use the Internet during their shopping process, among whom nearly one-third consult online ratings/review sites when selecting a dealer, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2012 U.S. Sales Satisfaction Index (SSI) StudySM released today.

"For years, new-vehicle buyers have accessed the Internet to research model information, vehicle features, configurations and pricing," said Chris Sutton, senior director of the Automotive Retail Practice at J.D. Power and Associates. "Now, neutral online ratings/review sites are playing a key role in dealer selection. Whether the online reviews are positive or negative, they impact buyers' willingness to visit a dealer."

The study finds that new-vehicle buyers are much more inclined to use a ratings/review site than a social networking site when selecting a dealer. However, satisfaction with the dealership experience is significantly higher among new-vehicle buyers who use social networking sites than among those who consult ratings/review sites.

"That's the power of the network," said Sutton. "New-vehicle buyers are using the Internet to read the reviews and recommendations of other buyers who have experience with a particular dealer, so it would be prudent for dealers to ensure their customers have had a satisfying experience, given their influence on prospective customers."

Among new-vehicle buyers, males are significantly more likely than females to consult ratings/review sites, whereas females are significantly more likely to consult social networking sites.  Both genders are equally likely to visit blogs, forums, or social networking sites (7% each); however, females post considerably more positive online statements regarding their dealer experience, compared with males (86% indicate comments "mostly positive" vs. 77%, respectively).

The study is a comprehensive analysis of the new-vehicle purchase experience and measures customer satisfaction with the selling dealer (satisfaction among buyers). The study also measures satisfaction with brands and dealerships that were shopped but ultimately rejected in favor of the selling brand and dealership (satisfaction among rejecters). Among buyers, satisfaction is examined across four measures (listed in order of importance): working out the deal (17%); salesperson (13%); delivery process (11%); and facility (10%). Among rejecters, satisfaction is examined across five measures (listed in order of importance): salesperson (20%); fairness of price (12%); facility (6%); inventory (6%); and experience negotiating (5%).

Overall sales satisfaction among both buyers and rejecters averages 664 on a 1,000-point scale in 2012, improving from 648 in 2011.

Satisfaction with the selling dealer averages 776 in 2012, a five-point increase from 2011.  Satisfaction improves in three of the four measures that examine satisfaction among buyers, with salesperson achieving the highest score.

Among buyers whose salesperson asked them questions to determine their vehicle needs, only 21 percent perceive some or too much pressure from dealer sales staff, compared with 32 percent among those whose salesperson did not ask questions about their needs who perceive some or too much pressure. These results indicate that customers prefer salespeople who invest the time up front to listen to them and ensure they select the right vehicle.  Perceived pressure decreases when sales consultants establish a business relationship and understand customer needs.

Given the increasing complexity of technology in today's new models, there is a growing need for dealers to spend time explaining complicated audio, entertainment and navigation systems so buyers can fully utilize all the benefits these technologies offer. A majority (86%) of new-vehicle buyers indicate that the dealer staff spent "just the right amount of time" with them during the delivery process. Among the 8 percent of new-vehicle buyers who say that the dealer staff did not spend enough time at delivery, nearly three-fourths indicate they would have preferred staff to spend more time reviewing their vehicle's features and technologies, such as pairing their phone to Bluetooth or demonstrating the navigation system.

Satisfaction with the dealership where rejecters shopped but did not buy their vehicle improves to 553 in 2012, a 28-point increase from 2011, with significant improvements in each of the five measures.

Lexus ranks highest among luxury brands in satisfaction with the new-vehicle buying experience for a second consecutive year, with an index score of 737. Rankings are based on the experiences of both buyers and rejecters. Infiniti (728) and Cadillac (725) follow in the luxury segment rankings to round out the three highest-performing brands. Year-over-year sales satisfaction improves the most for Infiniti (+52 index points), moving from ranking eighth in 2011 to rank second in 2012.

MINI ranks highest among mass market brands for a third consecutive year, with a score of 712. Buick (706) and GMC (683) follow in the mass market segment rankings. Honda improves the most among mass market brands (+30 index points) and moves from ranking 12th in 2011 to rank eighth in 2012.

Next-Generation Lexus IS F Coupe on the Way?

Lexus LF-CC Concept

AutoGuide talked with Lexus National Marketing Manager Brian Bolain and discovered some very interesting details about the next-generation IS:

“A V8 engine will fit, you could make that assumption,” says Lexus marketing boss Brian Bolain, speaking of the new LF-CC Concept at the SEMA Show last week.

“Looking at everything from a 4-cylinder to an 8-cylinder will fit,” he confirms, but the V8 is the exciting aspect, foreshadowing an all-but-confirmed IS-F Coupe.

As for what this new IS will look like, the LF-CC is a clear indication. “It’s very indicative of reality,” says Bolain. In particular he points to the monoform grille, which he says will first find its way onto the upcoming 2014 IS F-Sport sedan.

There’s plenty of speculation here — just because a V8 will fit in the IS engine bay doesn’t mean it will be released. Still, having a number of potential powertrain options for the next-generation sports sedan is certainly a good thing.

The more compelling detail in the AutoGuide story is that the new IS F SPORT sedan will do away with the bumper separating the upper and lower grille — can’t wait to see what that looks like.

Happy Friday! Thank you for this excellent review, Eric!

5-Star Review on Yelp:

"I recently purchased a car here and I have to say the service was Excellent.

I even go in and get my car washed there weekly, and grab some lunch at King's seafood.

My salesmen's name was Brad, he got me a really good deal, i would recommend him if you are in the market for a Lexus. I absolutely love my car, every-time i drive anywhere i get a thrill like nothing else.

I did a lot of shopping for cars and dealt with alot of dealerships and I have to say the Experience i had here made me a life long customer. I really felt like i was being screwed by other dealerships, Hidden costs would show up at the signing table and the salesmen were just shady, so i am impressed with my car and the service i got here.

This is my first review so I hope it helped"

Maintenance Monday: 74 Tips To Extend the Life of Your Car!

Care and Maintenance Tips Keep Your Car Running in Top-Notch Condition! We’ve compiled our best expert advice, surprising tricks, and car care tips to prolong the life of your automobile! We have provided a couple of handy tips here, please click the link to read more!

1. Be patient during the break-in period

You’ve bought your dream car and now you want to make it last at long as possible in top condition. Here are some things to remember as you pull it out of the dealer’s lot:

  • During the break-in period, typically the first 1,000 miles (1,600 km), keep your speed under 55 mph (88 kpm) or to the speed recommended by your car’s manufacturer.
  • Avoid heavy loads on the drive train, such as towing trailers, and loading the roof rack or trunk with heavy construction materials.
  • Do not allow your new car to idle for long periods — this is good advice for the life of your car, but especially during breakin. The oil pressure generated by doing so may not be sending oil to every part of your engine.
  • Use only light to medium acceleration, keeping the engine rpms below 3,000 for the first few hours of driving.

2. Drive with care everyday
Being car considerate shouldn’t stop after the break-in. Drive with care every day and your car will reward you with longer intervals without repair.

  • Do not race your car’s engine during start-up.This is a quick way to add years of wear to your engine, especially if it’s cold outside.
  • Accelerate slowly when you begin your drive. The most wear to the engine and drive train occurs in the first ten to twenty minutes of operation.
  • Warming the engine by letting it idle in the driveway is not a smart idea. The engine doesn’t operate at its peak temperature, resulting in incomplete fuel combustion, soot deposits on cylinder walls, oil contamination, and ultimately damaged components.
  • Put less strain on your engine and automatic transmission by shifting to neutral at red lights. Otherwise, the engine is still working to push the car even while it’s stopped.
  • Avoid driving at high speeds and accelerating quickly, especially when it’s very hot or very cold outside. Such driving behavior will result in more frequent repairs.
  • Extend the life of your tires with careful driving. Observe posted speed limits. Avoid fast starts, stops, and turns. Avoid potholes and objects on the road. Don’t run over curbs or hit the tire against the curb when parking. And, of course, don’t burn rubber.
  • When turning your steering wheel, don’t hold it in an extreme right or left position for more than a few seconds. Doing so can damage the power-steering pump.
  • Consolidate your short driving trips. Most of the wear and tear — as well as the pollution your car generates — takes place in the first few minutes of driving. Doing several errands at once, during low traffic hours if possible, will keep your engine happier longer.

3. Buy gas at reputable service stations

Ask whether the gas you buy is filtered at the pump and if the station has a policy about changing the pump filters regularly. If you get a song and dance, find another gas station. Some stations don’t have pump filters, making you more vulnerable to dirty gasoline. Other stations may not mix alcohol and fuel properly — or worse, water down their product. Find a station you trust and stick to it.

4. Don’t fill up if you see the tanker

If you happen to see a gasoline tanker filling the tanks at your local gas station, come back another day or go to a different station. As the station’s underground tanks are being filled, the turbulence can stir up sediment. Sediment in your gas can clog fuel filters and fuel injectors, causing poor performance and possibly necessitating repairs.

5. Go easy when you’re stuck

When stuck in mud or snow, don’t make the problem worse by damaging an expensive component. Gently rocking in an attempt to free the car is fine. But if it looks as though you’re really stuck, don’t keep at it. Throwing your car from forward to reverse repeatedly, as well as spinning tires at high speeds, can generate lots of heat and spell trouble for transmissions, clutches, and differentials. It may be cheaper in the long run to call the tow truck rather than risk big repair bills down the road. It’s a good idea to carry a traction aid in the trunk, such as sand, gravel, or cat litter.

6. Lighten up your key chain

Does your car key share a chain with a dozen or more other keys? That’s a pretty heavy load hanging off the car key when it’s in the ignition. The weight, combined with bouncing while you drive, can wear out the tumblers inside the ignition and eventually lead to ignition switch failure. To add years of service to your ignition switch, purchase a lightweight key chain that allows you to separate your ignition key from the others. Drive with only the ignition key in your ignition. If your ignition key “sticks” when you try to turn on the car, it’s a warning that your ignition switch is about to fail. Replace it before you get stranded.

7. Choose a good car insurer

Sometimes, no matter how careful you are, disaster inevitably strikes — typically in the form of an accident. Make sure that your car will be repaired to the best possible standard by finding an insurer that will pay for parts from the original manufacturer and guarantee the repairs it authorizes.

8. Keep an auto log

Keep a pad and pencil in the glove compartment and use them to record your gas fill-ups and mileage. If you notice that your gas mileage worsens, mention it to your service man. It may be an early warning sign that something is wrong with your car.

9. Preserve your car during long-term storage

If you are not going to use your car for more than a month, store it properly to prevent unnecessary damage and repairs upon your return.

  • Fill the gas tank to help prevent condensation from accumulating in the gas tank. Add a fuel stabilizer and drive the car around a bit to distribute the additive to engine parts.
  • Wash and wax the car thoroughly to protect the finish.
  • Place a vapor barrier on your garage floor. A 4-mil polyethylene drop cloth will do.
  • Disengage the parking brake to help avoid brake corrosion.
  • Put the car on jack stands to take the weight of the vehicle off the wheels and tires.
  • Disconnect and remove the battery to keep it from draining. Place the battery on a trickletype charger. Or periodically drain the battery, using a small light bulb, and then recharge it with a low-volt charger.
  • Plug the tailpipe with a rag to prevent moist air from infiltrating into it.

Fans! TRD Releases 2013 Lexus LS Body Kit!

Lexus LS F SPORT TRD

Just like Japanese tuner Modellista, official Lexus tuner TRD has released a body kit for the 2013 LS 460 F SPORT — the kit includes a split front spoiler, sideskirts, quad-exhausts with a rear diffuser, and a set of 20-inch wheels:

2013 Lexus LS TRD F SPORT Front

2013 Leuxs LS TRD F SPORT Rear

Lexus TRD LS F SPORT Grille

TRD Lexus LS F SPORT Wheel

For the TRD body kit and the quad exhausts, the cost is ¥504,000 ($6,404 USD) — the 20-inch wheels are ¥604,000 ($7,668 USD) alone. Much like the Modellista kit, there’s no word on North American availability.

See how Lexus is set to get a Turbo-Charged Four-Cylinder Engine in 2014!

Lexus ES 300h Engine

Last week at the Paris Motor Show, Lexus announced a new 2.5-liter hybrid engine that will be introduced into the lineup next year — now Toyota has released a couple more details:

An enhanced engine for use in hybrid vehicles, based on the 2.5-liter AR gasoline engine, adopts the Atkinson cycle and D-4S system. The enhanced engine achieves the world’s highest maximum thermal efficiency of 38.5 percent, realizing both high fuel efficiency and high output. Hybrid vehicle models equipped with the engine will be launched starting 2013.

Still no mention of the hybrid engine’s total system output, but early estimates have put it somewhere between 220-225 horsepower.

Also announced is 2.0L turbo-charged engine (!!!), set to debut in 2014:

Starting 2014, [Toyota] plans to launch a vehicle with a new 2.0-liter, turbo-charged AR engine, also based on the 2.5-liter AR gasoline engine. The new engine’s smaller displacement will provide higher fuel efficiency while the turbocharger will improve output.

While it remains unconfirmed, the 2.5L hybrid engine should be used in the next-generation IS and the current GS — considering compatibility, this would make both models eligible for the new 2.0L turbo-charged engine in 2014.

(The front-wheel drive ES and RX are also available with AR engines — the ES 300h and ES 250 in China, and the RX 270 in various markets. However unlikely, these two models could also be offered with the turbo-charged engine.)

Speculating on the New Lexus LF-CC Hybrid Engine!

Lexus LF-CC Engine Speculation

One of the more mysterious elements about the Lexus LF-CC is the 2.5L hybrid engine under the hood — the Paris press release reveals little:

[The new engine will be] appropriate to a sporting, D-segment coupe and low CO2 emissions, targeted below 100 g/km. This powertrain will achieve class-leading energy efficiency, with more than 2 hp produced per gram of CO2.

It adopts the Atkinson cycle and D-4S direct injection technology to optimise both the power and fuel-efficiency benefits of Lexus Hybrid Drive

Using these vague facts, My.IS administrator jruhi4 did some calculating (emphasis is mine):

The current port injection-only 2AR-FXE [engine from the ES 300h] is already producing the 200 total system horsepower…with D4-S injection boosting horsepower by just over 10% in the dual-injected 2GR-FSE 3.5-liter V6 versus its port injection-only 2GR-FE sibling, we suspect that total system horsepower for the new 2AR-FXE with D4S 2.5-liter 4-cylinder hybrid engine should be around 220-225 hp, a notion seconded by Lexus Enthusiast commentator MT.

When it was announced in June that a low-displacement hybrid powertrain for the GS would debut in Paris, I had assumed it would be a direct transplant of the 2.5L four-cylinder engine from the ES 300h — by adding D4S technology, this “new” hybrid engine gets a welcome boost that should push it past the 204-horsepower V6 engine in the current IS 250.

(While on the topic, I have to recommend the My.IS analysis of the LF-CC — very insightful.)

Thank you for this stunning review, Gillian!

Gorgeous 5-Star Review on Yelp:

"Lexus Carlsbad deserves six stars instead of five. I bought a 2011 IS250 CPO and absolutely love it. But, my review isn't about how much I love my new car. It's about how awesome everyone at Lexus Carlsbad is - from Gary, "Marathon Man" to Alan to Don. Everyone from the floor to finance and beyond was really helpful, extremely patient and bent over backwards to make my car buying experience the best. They treat you like family and make sure that you and the car are the right fit. A Lexus car is a Lexus car, you know what you're going to get. It's the people at Carlsbad Lexus that make this dealership spectacular."

Thank you for this wonderful review, Craig! We greatly appreciate you!

5-Star Review on Yelp:

"Purchased a pre-owned 2009 Toyota Prius from Trevor Perkins. I had previously purchased vehicles from Mossy Nissan in Kearny Mesa. What a different car-buying experience. I told him I was willing to be financed and the monthly payment range I was willing to pay. His first offer was in the range and after one more back and forth, we struck a deal. Nice facilities and the lounge area in the service department was a great place to hang out and wait for the papers to be drawn up."

Is Lexus Planning a CT Spin-off?

2013 Lexus CT 200h

Back in June, WardsAuto interviewed Lexus general manager Mark Templin about the CT 200h, and found out some interesting details:

“It really is a good car for moving people into luxury for the first time,” he says.

The median buyer age for the Lexus CT is 53, below the brand’s median age of 59, the auto maker says. The hatchback’s buyers have a median annual household income of $150,000, more than the $100,000 bracket originally forecast.

Although Lexus did not plan to offer anything smaller than the CT compact 5-door in the U.S., Templin, noting the car’s success, now says there is a “possibility to build other vehicles off that platform” to grow sales to new, younger luxury buyers.

The “possibility to build other vehicles off [the CT] platform” is expectedly vague — the CT is built off the same platform as the Toyota Prius, could this mean a Lexus Prius V in the future? Is Mark Templin simply referring to additional powertrains for the CT?

It brings to mind the now-classic GoAuto interview with Lexus Australia marketing manager Peter Evans:

Another likely unveil for [the Paris Auto Show in September] is a hot hatch variant of the CT200h and Mr Evans revealed its arrival is “a matter of when rather than if – or rather when and what because there are a few alternatives”.

Using the 200-hp, 2.5L 4-cylinder hybrid engine from the ES 300h to create a CT 300h seems like a good plan to me, but maybe I’m not thinking big enough — what would you like to see Lexus do with the CT?

New Lexus LF-LC Concept to Debut in Australia!

New Lexus LF-LC Concept

Lexus will debut a new version of the LF-LC concept at the 2012 Australian International Motor Show in Sydney, and has released the first teaser image — let’s take a closer look:

New Lexus LF-LC Concept

Despite being blue, there doesn’t appear to be any design differences compared to the original LF-LC concept:

Original Lexus LF-LC Concept

There are some general power train specs in the Lexus Australia press release, which describes the new concept as a 370 kilowatt (496+ hp), all-wheel drive hybrid coupe — Australian website Car Advice has more:

A Lexus source says the Sydney show car will showcase “advanced materials and construction processes” that could be applied to the production LF-LC.

Expect those materials to include carbon fibre, which accounted for two-thirds of the $750,000 Lexus LFA supercar.

“It would be silly of us not to use what we learned from building the LFA for other models,” added our insider.

That’s the extent of the news so far, but there is one curious element — only Lexus Australia announced this new LF-LC II concept, which suggests this could just be a minor update. Still, when it comes the LF-LC, even a color change is a big deal.

The Australian International Motor Show opens October 18th.

Lexus Compact Crossover Rendering from Japan!

By way of Club Lexus, an unknown Japanese magazine has attempted to render the much-rumored Lexus compact crossover:

2013 Lexus Compact Crossover

Even though the design is completely overcooked with Wald International-inspired styling, it does illustrate an advantage that Lexus has over its competitors — no matter the model, the new spindle grille brings an aggressive & bold look that really stands out, especially up against vehicles like the BMW X1 & Audi Q3.

Lexus HS Hydrogen Fuel-Cell Prototype Spotted!

Lexus HS Hydrogen Fuel-Cell Prototype

A Lexus HS hydrogen fuel-cell prototype has been spotted in Death Valley by CAR Magazine spy photographers.

With the front grille being the only exterior difference compared to the standard HS, there’s only one way its secret could be revealed — here’s the HS on a fuel stop:

Lexus HS Fuel Cell Prototype Refuelled

This comes one week after Toyota USA president Jim Lentz announced that a hydrogen fuel-cell sedan would debut in 2015 — at the time, no further details were given, including what brand the vehicle would be released under.

Even with the HS test mule, there’s no concrete evidence that this fuel-cell sedan would be a Lexus — still, it makes for some interesting speculation. Would you be interested in a hydrogen-powered Lexus?

Win a Chance to Hit the Track in a Lexus LFA!

Lexus LFA profile desert

Have you always pined after the Lexus LFA supercar? If so, pay attention: as part of its annual Golden Opportunity Sales Event, Lexus is giving one lucky fan the chance to hit the track in an LFA.

The track in question is the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in Salinas, California, where the lucky winner will be able to flog the V-10-powered coupe along with The Skip Barber Racing School. If that isn’t enough for enthusiasts, the day’s drive in the LFA also comes with a one-on-one session with racer Scott Pruett, who has raced in NASCAR, Champ Car, IMSA, Trans-Am, and Grand-Am races.

Powering all LFAs is a 4.8-liter V-10 engine rated at 553 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque that power is routed to the rear wheels through a six-speed automated sequential gearbox. Lexus quotes a 0-to-60 mph time of 3.6 seconds and a top speed of 202 mph. The automaker specially built a loom to weave the carbon fiber needed to create the car’s carbon fiber reinforced polymer body, and, unsurprisingly, gave the “base” car a price tag of $375,875, including destination.

Getting a chance to see an LFA – let alone to slip behind the wheel of one – will be a real treat, as Lexus is only building 20 copies per month of the supercar. Fans who want to win a chance to drive the LFA will need to act quickly – while the Golden Opportunity Sales Event may go on through Labor Day, the LFA sweepstakes closes on August 21 at 1:00 p.m. PDT. And for those who are thinking that they might be able to move the decimal point over on the LFA’s price tag thanks to the annual sales event, think again: GOSE offers don’t apply to the range-topping coupe.

Thank you for this fabulous review! Happy Wednesday!

"This review is for the service department.  This was the first time taking our vehicle to any Lexus dealership in the San Diego area, and we chose Lexus Carlsbad due to their highly rated service reviews.  The feedback was more positive than San Diego Lexus in Kearny Mesa - apparently Lexus Carlsbad is a family owned dealership while San Diego Lexus is owned by Penske, and that seems to have an impact. Chris Guglielmucci was our service consultant and did a great job.

Everyone in the service department worked together to make sure we were taken care of every step of the way.  We received the high quality service all the way from vehicle drop off to cashier payment that we have come to expect from Lexus.

One surprising point - service prices were surprisingly reasonable.  They were only slightly higher than prices quoted by local repair shops.  With the advantage of having quality service, parts, and a great loaner car we were completely happy to drive 30 miles from our home to have maintenance performed at Lexus Carlsbad.  The 2012 IS250 was a great loaner, too.

I would gladly return to Lexus Carlsbad for future work and recommend their service."

Lexus shifts LF-LC coupe concept to higher gear!

The wild Lexus LF-LC coupe concept that wowed visitors at the Detroit auto show is on track for development, signaling a new direction for a brand that has fallen from first to third in the U.S. luxury sales rankings.

Toyota is on a mission to make Lexus sportier and more compelling to potential buyers--and it starts with the LF-LC, which was designed at Toyota's Calty studio in Newport Beach, Calif.

Company executives said in January that the flashy 2+2 sports coupe was not planned for production. But several Lexus insiders now say the overwhelming reaction means it almost certainly will come to market.

Dealers could see the coupe in their showrooms within three years.

Toyota registered the trademark for LF-LC in February, after the Detroit show.

"There has been a lot of interest from dealers and distributors," a Lexus official said.

The LFA V10 supercar was a first step in the effort to give Lexus more flash, but only 500 are being built worldwide. Company insiders have said that a production version of the LF-LC would be more advanced technologically than the dowdy, heavy SC 430 coupe that was killed in 2010--more of an LFA "lite" than a traditional coupe.

It also would be targeted further upscale, against the Porsche 911 Turbo and Aston Martin Vantage, both of which tickle the $120,000 mark.

Lexus dealers recently were sent crystal sculptures with a 3-D laser rendering of the LF-LC etched inside the crystal. Inscribed on the crystal were the words, "2012 GS Challenge ... 27,500 Sales." The underlying message: Hit the sales target for the mid-sized sedan and get the cool coupe.

But the Lexus source said the LF-LC probably would be produced even if dealers don't hit the GS sales target.

Lexus' 11-year reign as the best-selling luxury brand in the United States ended last year as it slipped behind BMW and Mercedes-Benz. Lexus continued to trail BMW and Mercedes in the first half of this year.

The 2011 earthquake in Japan hurt sales by pinching production, but executives concede the brand's staid lineup needs to elicit more surprise and delight from buyers through styling and performance.

Mark Templin, Lexus' global and U.S. chief, said recently: "In the past, we talked about the perfection of our product. But the 'Pursuit of Perfection' idea lacks emotion."

While carrying the signature spindle grille of all Lexus vehicles, the LF-LC has swoopy, fluid lines similar to those of the exotic LFA. But with 2+2 seating and a hybrid powertrain, the LF-LC appears way more practical.

Toyota can take up to 36 months to take a prototype to Job 1. Much depends on whether the new vehicle is derived from an existing chassis and component set. If Lexus uses the IS-F sedan platform, it could shave months off the development time.

At the Detroit show, Toyota executives expressed enthusiasm for the car but said it was just a concept created to judge consumer reaction.

The debut of the Acura NSX may have shocked Toyota executives into taking action.

The LF-LC has since toured the auto show circuit and has appeared at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este on Lake Como in Italy.

Coupes typically are slow sellers after the initial excitement dies down. But Lexus may be willing to take the risk to inject some pizzazz into the brand.

The previous-generation SC 430 peaked at 14,462 sales in 2002, its first full year of sales, before dropping sharply to half that in 2006. Volumes plummeted from there.

MT Then and Now: 1990-2013 Lexus ES

The Lexus ES has come a long way since 1990, when the entry-level luxury sedan was nothing more than an optioned-up Toyota Camry with a new grille, headlights and taillights. We recently sampled the 2013 Lexus ES and came away impressed at the progress the front-drive luxury sedan has made over the last 20 plus years.

MT Then and Now: 1990 2013 Lexus ES image

1990 Lexus ES 250
In 1990, Toyota launched its premium Lexus brand with two models: the executive-level LS 400 and the volume model ES 250 based on the Toyota Camry family sedan. The ES 250 was powered by a 156-hp 2.5-liter V-6 mated to a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. We found the Lexus ES 250 “a pleasant, if benign, little sedan with a light and polite feel, a car brimming with high quality and the latest technology but totally lacking the aggressive character and style sought after by enthusiasts.”

MT Then and Now: 1990 2013 Lexus ES image

1992 Lexus ES 300
Two years after the Lexus ES 250 arrived, the premium automaker debuted the Lexus ES 300. More upscale features and options as well as a sleeker, more rounded body distinguished the ES 300 from the Camry. The ES 300 still shared the Camry’s engine, now a larger 185-hp 3.0-liter V-6. Transmission choices remained the same as the ES 250.

“The ES fulfills the promise of its new styling, delivering a balanced blend of sporty performance and spoiling comfort,” we wrote. “The V-6 is exceptionally smooth and quiet. Yet one stab on the accelerator will prove it’s not daydreaming under there.” We were also impressed by its ride, noting the Lexus “soaks up bumps without distraction” despite not being as cushy as the contemporary Camry.

MT Then and Now: 1990 2013 Lexus ES image

1999 Lexus ES 300
Lexus continued to evolve the ES 300, and by 1999 the 3.0-liter V-6 now made 210 hp and 220 lb-ft of torque. We were impressed with the revised car’s performance saying, “At the track, the new car hit 60 mph in 7.8 seconds, two tenths quicker than our recently departed 1997 ES 300 long-termer. A quarter-mile pass of 15.9 seconds at 88.5 mph also topped that car’s 16.1-second/86.5-mph best effort. While a slightly improved slalom number (64.4 versus 62.9 mph) rightly indicates that transitional handling and responsiveness have been sharpened a tad for 1999.”

2002 Lexus ES 300
With the 2002 ES 300, Lexus added more pronounced bubble headlights similar to those found on the Toyota Celica. Mechanically a new drive-by-wire system replaced the throttle cable and a five-speed automatic transmission was new. We were pleased with its price-to-value ratio as well: “The ’02 ES 300 is a slick piece. Its velvety mechanical refinement and ride are unmatched in the $30,000-plus price range. … Although the target customers may need some time to get used to the avant garde front-end created in the company’s Japanese design studios, the new ES 300 is definitely an entry-lux knockout.”

2007 Lexus ES 350
Any pretense of sportiness was gone by the 2007 model year, despite the new 272-hp 3.5-liter V-6 and six-speed automatic transmission. We said the new engine’s power was “perfectly adequate” and that “the car is soft in corners, but well controlled over bumpy, uneven road surfaces. It’ll neither excite nor surprise, and except for some vague on-center steering feel, it won’t make the spirited driver feel out of sorts.”

2010 Lexus ES 350
“Those who want spectacular handling should look at a BMW 3 Series or an Infiniti G before the ES,” we said about the outgoing ES, but we suggested the Lexus may shine as a road trip car. “The soft suspension does a great job of absorbing bumps and potholes; combine that with the quiet cabin, and this is a car that would be a terrific place to burn miles on the Interstate.”

While the original Lexus ES was supposed to be the larger LS sedan’s cheaper stablemate, it “started life as little more than a Toyota Camry playing dress-up.” For 2013, the sixth-generation model now uses the Avalon’s platform instead of the Camry’s, with styling that “adds character and panache to a car that desperately needed a big dose of it, and the resemblance to the senior Lexus will surely appeal to social climbers.”
